The People’s Movement organised a protest on Wednesday 10th November against the Irish state’s participation in the EU’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) military initiative and the creation of an EU army. These developments are a further repudiation of the Irish state’s neutrality as outlined in its constitution. Communist Party of Ireland members participated in the protest, as the CPI has a long standing policy of opposition to EU membership. The CPI campaigned against the Lisbon Treaty in both referendums, warning that the treaty laid the foundation for a massive transfer of sovereignty to Brussels with respect to defence, security, and diplomatic matters. Further steps towards the creation of an EU army will be a key aim of France’s when it holds the presidency of the EU council in the first six months of 2022.
