“The Communist Party of Ireland calls on the Irish Government to support the Cuban government’s resolution at the UN General Assembly calling for the ending of the fraudulent US classification of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.
The unilateral classification of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism is aimed at undermining Cuban sovereignty by destroying its economy, Trump himself said on January 8th 2026 that ‘I don’t think much more pressure can be applied, short of going in and destroying the place.”
Between March 1st 2025 and January 8th 2026 the illegal US blockade of Cuba cost Cuba over 8 trillion US dollars. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US administration’s policy is to block off every avenue that Cuba finds to escape from US sanctions. The US has imposed a collective punishment on the Cuban people which is contrary to International Law.
US policy towards Cuba is a threat to the sovereignty of all countries, including Ireland. On January 29th 2026 US Executive Order 14380 authorised the imposition of tariffs on imports from any country that sold or supplied oil to Cuba, directly or indirectly. The US believes that it, and it alone has the right to decide with whom each and every country can trade. If the Irish government truly believes in the sovereignty and equality of all nations it will not only support the Cuban resolution, but it will use its Presidency of the EU to break the illegal US blockade. As Charles Stewart Parnell said in relation to British attempts to maintain its colonial rule in Ireland, “No man has a right to fix the boundary of the march of a nation.”
