Statement by the Communist Party of Ireland
1 October 2019
The announcement that Harland & Wolff has been bought by Infrastrata, a British energy firm, is due in no small measure to the swift action of the workers, who occupied the yard to defend their jobs. Their action saved the jobs of seventy-nine workers who are directly employed, along with others in the supply chain.
This shows that there is a need to expand the engineering base in Ireland to cater to growing demands for renewable energy.
It is a victory for workers taking decisive action to defend their jobs, a strategy that workers in the Wrightbus company could take inspiration from.
