Statement from the Communist Party of Ireland on the British Government decision to Charge Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh of Kneecap.

                                                                        The silencing of dissent.

The Communist Party of Ireland expresses its solidarity with Kneecap, who are now under serious threat by the forces of the British State.

The arrest and charging of one of the group’s members Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, is just the latest in the ongoing effort to silence the group and to intimidate all those who oppose genocide in Gaza by the Zionist IDF.

It is clear this is not just an attempt to silence Kneecap, but to silence all cultural workers who have spoken out against the ongoing genocide.

The British state has used the same draconian “anti-terror” laws against thousands of Irish people over the decades to silence its opponents.

It is deeply ironic that those who continue to arm and give political and diplomatic cover for the Zionist genocide in Gaza and the ongoing repression of Palestinians in the West Bank remain free and unaccountable to any legal sanction.

They wish to silence an artist, not charge those who order the dropping of bombs on terrified people sheltering in tents, IDF soldiers killing Palestinians with impunity, nor hold to account their political masters.

They will not cease supplying them with weapons for industrial scale mass-murder or end financing the Zionist regime.

Kneecap have struck a chord and reached millions of young people across the world with their courageous stand on Palestine. The British state want to gag them.

The myth of “democracy” in capitalist countries is increasingly being exposed for what it is.

It is beholden on all of us and in particular with artists to stand shoulder to shoulder with Liam Óg and Kneecap.

We need to intensify the cultural boycott of Zionist Israel.

We need more from the Irish state than empty sound-bites: we demand real action.

An injury to one is the concern of all. Solidarity with Kneecap and all those who have shown solidarity with the heroic Palestinian people.
