A new manoeuvre against Cuba is being prepared in the European Parliament.
This week (Tuesday, June 8) in the European Parliament, a small group of right-wing MEPs will be promoting a draft resolution that aims to condemn Cuba with false accusations of repression of its artistic movement.
None of these MEPs has a record of opposing the 60-year illegal blockade on Cuba imposed by the Unites Stated government. Like most establishment politicians, they are extremely selective in their actions and condemnations. There has been little, if any, criticism of the violent repression and growing death toll in Colombia, as that government’s attempt to crush the workers’ and peasants’ resistance. The EU institutions and the majority of the MEPs have remained silent on the growing repression of the workers’ and peasants’ movements of Latin America.
This cabal of MEPs have never been interested in the rights of the Cuban people, and have never raised their voices to condemn the US government’s economic blockade against 11 million Cubans, which constitutes a massive, flagrant, and systematic violation of the rights of all Cubans and a form of collective punishment of the Cuban people.
The so-called “San Isidro Movement” is not an artistic project, nor is it an indigenous movement. This grouping supports the economic blockade against their own people, and has even called for US military intervention in Cuba.
One exhibit featured by the “San Isidro Movement” depicts a person defecating while wrapped in the Cuban national flag. These are grave insults to the Cuban people and their proud history of anti-imperialist resistance.
Like many so-called “human rights groups” across the world, the “San Isidro Movement” openly boast that they receive money from various organisations and individuals in the United States who have proven links to terrorist organisations.
We only need to recall the faux uproar in the US Congress about alleged Russian and Chinese interference in their electoral process. Once again, we have a case of the USA and the EU telling everyone else to “do as we say, not as we do”.
There is ample evidence of the “San Isidro Movement’s” malicious intentions in their own social media posts.
The video images showing the sound physical state in which the leader of the “San Isidro Movement” arrived in hospital, after a few days of an alleged hunger strike, as well as his own statements about the excellent medical care received, can be viewed on several social networks.
It is no coincidence that this individual has been decried by the most extreme anti-Cuban elements based in Miami, who accused him of betraying their sham movement.
The accusations against the Cuban government of kidnapping this individual, and of police repression against members of his movement, are completely false.
What would be the reaction of the Irish state or the EU if an organisation or another country advocated and promoted an economic blockade and military intervention against any of the member states that make up the European Union? What would be their reaction if that same organisation was encouraged and financed by a foreign government?
It is not bad timing or by accident that this motion is coming before the European Parliament at this time, since it is an attempt to sabotage the implementation of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement, and to undermine the dialogues on human rights between Cuba and the European Union.
Democratic opinion as well as all progressive-minded individuals and organisations here in Ireland need to mobilise to prevent this motion being adopted by the EU parliament. We must all contact the Irish MEPs and call upon them to oppose this motion. We should also request that they use their social media platforms to oppose this motion and alert their supporters of this plot against Cuba.
We know that the Irish people have given great support and solidarity to the Cuban people over the decades. We now need to demonstrate that solidarity once again.
Please send a message to all Irish MEPs requesting that they speak out loud and clear against this extremely hostile action towards the Cuban people.
