Medical Aid from Ireland to Cuba

In spite of the extremely difficult challenges, CPI members working alongside Aid for Cuba in Belfast were successful in breaking the illegal US blockade of Cuba and delivering much needed medical supplies to a hospital in Havana. The work that has gone into raising the funds to transport this aid is enormous and we salute everyone involved for their commitment to supporting our Cuban comrades.

The following message was received from the Medical Director in the Havana hospital on delivery of the medical supplies:

“I would like you to see the wave of joy that you have given to this hospital, well, all of you, all of you. There were those doctors, Enrique, who looked like … I brought my brother who came to see my mommy, who is sick, to help me carrying boxes; my brother, he is a strong man, he said “Taimí, it looked like you were giving them (to the doctors) a house, a car, I don’t know…”, because every time we saw the trocars, the gloves, the masks… their eyes (the doctor eyes) lit up, the people jumping with joy. I, I can’t explain it to you, a joy… because I had also told you that we were, we were in a bad situation, that we had stopped elective surgeries. And we were, we were exhausted, I am exhausted, I finished so late last night, but with joy and satisfaction and today I told in the morning meeting to all the doctors.

We are disseminating that there are resources, a coverage of at least 3 months with everything that was brought in. Now we are calling the director of the maternity hospital to also pick up some things. Julito was … Julito, he did not believe the things… the things that were coming, because he thought they were just 3 little things, when he saw his truck full, going to the paediatric hospital he was amazed. And we are really grateful, because not everyone does what you do, brother, not everyone does it.

Yes, and besides, it was good, it was very, very good (quality donation). Colostomy bags… we did not have colostomy bags; the patients had to put plastic bags in the stoma, well, anyway. And now we have colostomy bags, I think I will have bags for about 6 months, we have a joy, but a joy!!

No matter the challenges, the incredible work of Aid for Cuba and our own CPI members will continue, as will our support for these critical medical supply missions. Cuba will never walk alone.

¡Venceremos!
