A wreath laying and commemoration event took place in Dublin today to mark the departure of the first contingent of volunteers to the International Brigades . Activists within the Communist Party of Ireland took part. It is worth bearing mind that Fascism is on the rise again globally. This Party has a proud role in taking on those fascists who raise their ugly head. We and others will do it again.
The event was organized by Fibi Ireland in conjunction with the East Wall History Group , and was attended by family members of Brigadistas Tommy Wood , Michael May , Dinny Coady , Jack Nalty and Michael O’Riordan and of Bill Gannon who was one of the chief organizers of recruitment of volunteers . Wreaths and flowers were placed on behalf of the groups (remembering all those who died in the anti-fascist struggle) , as well as by the family members present and Harry Owens placed flowers and read a message from daughters of Gerry Doran.
Local actor Anto Seery read an extract from a letter to the Irish people from wounded volunteers appealing for support for the Spanish Republic against the fascist coup .
Brenda O’Riordan concluded the event with an emotional rendition of “The Minstrel Boy”.
Due to COVID concerns the event was not advertised publicly but those assembled represented a cross section of political and community activists , family members and anti fascists .
While praising the self sacrifice of the men and women who challenged the fascist advance of Franco , Mussolini and Hitler , speakers emphasized that the best way to honour their memory was to continue to oppose fascism in its 21st century manifestations .
Frank Ryan and his group of volunteers made their way from Dublin to Liverpool and ultimately via France to Spain . A memorial service also took place today on the banks of the Mersey to commemorate their courageous journey , again emphasizing the international nature of the anti-fascist struggle .
Today we also recalled Eddie O’Neill and Manus O’Riordan , two friends and comrades who sadly passed away this year . They will be missed .
